3D Systems, which also has a branch in Budel, the Netherlands, is acquiring Titan Robotics. This company produces high-volume industrial 3D printers.

US-based 3D Systems is a company focused on developing 3D printers, 3D printing materials and 3D scanners. In doing so, the company focuses on healthcare and industry. 3D Systems also offers a 3D printing service. The company was founded in 1986, making it an early player in the 3D printing market.

Industrial applications

Titan Robotics is a manufacturer of 3D printers for industrial applications. These printers use a process called pellet extrusion. This technique uses pellets as raw material. According to Titan Robotics, this offers several advantages. For instance, the cost of these pellets is up to 10 times lower than that of traditional filament. At the same time, the printer enables higher print speeds.

Among other things, the company is known for its Atlas 3D printers. These are suitable for the flexible filaments TPU, TPE, TPC and PEBA. They can also handle standard filaments, such as PLA, ABS, PP, PETG and ASA. High-performance filaments are also suitable, including nylon, PC, CF-PEI, GF-PEKK, PPS and PSU.

Single, dual and hybrid extruders

The printers are available in several variants. Some feature a single extruder, while others have double extruders. The latter option allows multiple materials to be processed in one print. It is also possible to add a third extruder for more flexibility. A hybrid version is also available. It can print based on pellets, but also on traditional filament.

The Atlas HS-line 3D printers also offers integrated post-processing options. This includes a milling head to remove any supporting structures or unevenness. The HS-line thus also automates away an important part of post-processing.

Custom print volume

Customers can configure the print volume of the Atlas printers as required. By default, the printers are available - depending on their model - with a print volume of around 76 by 76 by 114 cm, 106 by 106 by 121 cm or 127 by 127 by 182 cm. However, it is also possible to have the print bed customised.

"As a leading additive manufacturing solutions partner in manufacturing and healthcare, 3D Systems is committed to meeting the breadth of manufacturing needs of our customers," said Dr Jeffrey Graves, president and CEO, 3D Systems.

"Adding Titan Robotics' unique extrusion technology allows us to address our customers' needs for higher print volumes, superior performance and improved productivity at significantly lower costs. Through their printers' innovative modular approach and ability to use both pellet and filament product forms in an open architecture with widely available polymer production systems, we expect the embrace of industrial 3D printing to continue to accelerate. Combining Titan Robotics' technical and application expertise with the global reach of its sales, service and applications teams, we are well positioned to support our customers across the full scope of our markets."

3D Systems expects to complete the acquisition of Titan Robotics in April 2022.
