Revolutionary software, co-developed by AkzoNobel's Powder Coatings business and CoatingsAI, uses artificial intelligence to help customers improve the application process and reduce their carbon footprint so they can powder coat more sustainably.
The technology, dubbed Flightpath, optimises equipment settings to reduce defects and overspray and improve powder consumption. This allows companies to reduce costs. Post-processing is avoided and time and energy are saved. In short, companies can powder coat more sustainably.
AI-based software
The AI-based software has been in development for two years. The software allows users to optimise device settings such as gun movements. It allows them to achieve more uniform, consistent coverage with fewer errors. This is possible thanks to AI-powered recommendations. The software requires no complex integration and constantly adjusts recommended parameters as conditions change.
Agreement CoatingAI and AkzoNobel
AkzoNobel and CoatingAI recently signed an exclusivity agreement. They will be joining forces after first meeting at AkzoNobel’s ‘Paint the Future’ start-up challenge in 2021.
More sustainable powder coating
"We are excited to partner with coatingAI and strengthen our technical service capabilities." So says Remco Maassen van den Brink, Marketing Director of AkzoNobel's Powder Coatings division. "We proactively look for ways to support customers in making their operations more sustainable. This will significantly improve our ability to help them achieve better results. At the same time, we can contribute to our own ambition to halve CO2 emissions in the value chain by 2030."
Acceleration
Marlon Boldrini, CEO of coatingAI: "Working with AkzoNobel from day one has helped accelerate our vision. Our solution is built on the power of artificial intelligence and AkzoNobel's technical expertise. It will not only increase efficiency for their customers. It will also drive greater sustainability within the powder coating industry."
Powder revolution
"Working with a startup like coatingAI - which is pushing boundaries to transform the coating industry - means we can accelerate our own powder revolution and deliver services like no other," adds Maassen van den Brink. "It is the latest example of how we are constantly innovating and looking for new ways to provide customers with the most progressive and sustainable solutions."
Energy savings calculator
Earlier this year, the company's Powder Coatings division was the first in the industry to launch an openly accessible online energy-saving calculator for all powder coating users. It helps customers better understand how even small changes in the coating process can have a big impact in terms of becoming more energy efficient.
