Planet Labs announced it will start producing its Pelican satellites in Berlin, Germany. It aims to respond to the growing demand for data from the European market with this new production location.

US-based Planet Labs provides satellite data and insights about the earth to customers on a daily basis. This data helps customers make decisions. In doing so, it targets both governments and organisations in a variety of sectors. These include agriculture and forestry, but also insurance companies, financial organisations and scientific institutions.

Available via software suite

The company makes this data accessible via a software suite. Among other things, it allows monitoring a particular location on a daily basis, obtaining high-resolution images of locations or mapping distances. The suite can also be used to obtain information on, for example, earth temperatures, soil moisture or biomass.

Planet Labs is headquartered in San Francisco, USA. This is also where the company produces the spacecraft it uses to launch its satellites into the earth. The company also has a European headquarters in Berlin.

Doubling production capacity

Planet Labs is opening a new production site for its Pelican satellites in the German capital. With this, it will double its production capacity. In addition, the company expects to add around 70 employees to its existing team of some 150 working in Berlin.

The company reports seeing increasing demand for its services from the European market. With the new production site, it aims to be able to meet this demand.
