Robot manufacturer ABB is taking over Codian Robotics. This company from Ede in Gelderland focuses on the production of delta robots. These are mainly used for performing precise pick and place tasks. With the acquisition, ABB strengthens its activities in the delta robot market. Financial details of the acquisition were not disclosed.
A delta robot consists of three arms attached to the base of the robot using universal joints. The robot arm can move in the X, Y and Z directions, but not rotate. The robot is usually placed above the worktop, with the three arms of the robot meeting in a triangle and moving above the worktop.
ABB has been active in the field of delta robots for years. For example, the company supplies its IRB 360 series of robots, also known as FlexPicker. This delta robot is focused fast pick and place operations, features a reduced footprint and - depending on the version - is suitable for loads up to 8 kg.

In the future, we will be able to offer our customers fully integrated solutions worldwide and for every sector," Hans Timmer, managing director of ABB's Machine Automation division and managing director of B&R.
"Our acquisition underscores our focus on breakthrough technology, helping our customers realise the full potential of automation and exploit their flexibility in the fast-changing business landscape," Sami Atiya, managing director of ABB Robotics & Discrete Automation. "Codian Robotics' technology and industry expertise perfectly complements our suite of solutions for the food and beverage, pharmaceutical, service robotics and logistics sectors, while also supporting ABB's machine-centric robotics offerings."
