At the recently held Paris Air Show, Michelin and Safran presented the world's first connected tyres for the aviation industry. The innovation, called 'PresSense', includes an electronic pressure sensor installed in the tyre that significantly improves and simplifies maintenance on the ground.

Sensor

The new tyre is the result of a now two-year collaboration between Michelin and Safran. PresSense is a wireless solution that functions as a built-in system. The electronic pressure sensor in the tyre collects information on inflation pressure. The digital data is remotely transported by a reader on a smartphone and transmitted to the maintenance database. This process is much easier than conventional maintenance that requires manual pressure collection through the wheel valve and a pressure gauge. This is quite an operation when the inflation pressure exceeds 200 psi (15 bar).

Collaboration

"We are delighted to have been able to partner with Michelin, the leader in tyre end-use with extensive experience in tyre innovation and connectivity," said Vincent Mascré, CEO of Safran Landing Systems. "Together, we are able to offer our customers a reliable, efficient and time-saving solution."

Frank Moreau, president of Michelin Aircraft Tyre, added: "The collaboration between our teams has been decisive in this process. PresSense is a true technological innovation that responds to the demand of our customers."

PresSense implementation planned for 2019.
