Isn't it great? While you are on the road with your electric car, it is continuously recharged. In theory, the 'tank' never runs out and the drive can last indefinitely. Israeli start-up ElectReon introduced dynamic wireless charging a few years ago. Where does it stand now?

It will take quite a lot to realise ElectReon’s plans. To be able to drive non-stop in an electric car, the road infrastructure will need to be adapted. This is because charging pads will need to be installed beneath the road surface and supplied with electricity from the grid. Electric cars must be adapted to read these charging pads.

A daunting task, of course, because it requires the cooperation of governments, it affects the maintenance of road surfaces and the modifications to the electric car require investments that quickly raise eyebrows. Leaving aside the fact that your car is always charged, it seems like there is no financial benefit for the user.

For now, it seems that this part of the plan is developing only slowly. However, ElecTreon is not sitting still. More feasible, for example, is the system where the same technology is used, but only in car parks at companies or, for example, supermarkets and shopping centres. Now you need charging stations. Installation and maintenance are hefty costs and - given the growth of electric driving - you soon run out of charging stations. By installing ramps in these places, you can theoretically make the whole area 'charging station'.

The success of ElecTreon's systems depends heavily on the cooperation of car manufacturers. Currently, 14 have joined, which is a good start but not enough to make a serious impact.
