Eindhoven-based Vespo introduces towels and duvet covers made of recycled cotton. The textile wholesaler says it is the first in the Benelux to launch such products.
In 2003, Vespo acquired the trademark rights from the textile company Walra, which ceased trading after 128 years in business. It is under this name that the towels and duvet covers made from recycled cotton have been launched.
Manufactured in Pakistan
The new textile products are manufactured in collaboration with a Pakistani partner. The cotton used to make the products is also sourced in that country. The other half of the products consists of material made from collected plastic (PET) bottles. A new production process has been set up for the sustainable bed and bath textiles, as director Ed Veelenturf explains in an article on Deondernemer.nl. “The yarn made from recycled cotton is more delicate,” the director states on the website. “That is why organic cotton has been added. The quality of the products must not suffer as a result of the recycling process. We stand by our quality.”
According to Vespo, one recycled bath towel saves around 2441 litres of water. The 'Walra Remade Cotton Blend' has now received environmental certification from RemoKey. The collection is sold at the same price as existing products. "As a result, we make less profit on these products, but they are accessible to many consumers."
After bath and bed textiles, kitchen textiles will also be made from recycled material. In addition, according to De Ondernemer, the wholesaler is developing similar sustainably produced items under 'private label', for customers who sell them under their own brand.
