Solarwatt GmbH has become the first German solar panel manufacturer to achieve Cradle to Cradle certification. Solarwatt produces its glass-glass solar modules in Dresden. This qualifies the Saxon company's solar modules as particularly sustainable throughout the entire cycle - from material procurement to recycling. With this certification, Solarwatt is responding to the growing interest in sustainable solar modules in Europe.

"It is important to us that our solar panels not only provide clean energy, but are also produced sustainably. Solarwatt has already set up its production accordingly in recent years and uses 100 per cent green electricity. We have gone through the demanding certification process to make our commitment visible to our customers now too," says general manager Erik de Leeuw of Solarwatt B.V.

Highest level of sustainability

Cradle to Cradle certification is a globally recognised standard that assesses materials and products for their environmental performance as well as social implications. "In contrast to environmental standards, the company's social responsibility is also considered. For example, using the UN Global Compact Self Assessment Tool," explains Annika Beck, Corporate Social Responsibility Manager at Solarwatt.

Assessment in five categories

The categories assessed are: Material health, Material cycle, Renewable energy sources, Water management and Social responsibility. Certification takes place at Basic, Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum levels. The lowest level determines the final certification level. Thus, to achieve a high rating, a product must score equally high in all categories.

The independent Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute (C2CPII) awards the certificates. Solarwatt glass-glass solar modules have been assessed by EPEA, which is accredited by C2CPII. Only two other photovoltaic panel manufacturers worldwide have current Cradle to Cradle certification. Solarwatt is the first German solar panel manufacturer to receive this certification. Solarwatt's solar panels were rated Gold in the Renewables and Water Management subcategories. Silver in the other categories, ultimately leading to the final Silver designation.

"We are proud to have achieved this holistic and demanding certification with such a good level. This is a big step towards our goal of consistently making our company and our product range sustainable," said Annika Beck.
