Since last week, a documentary series on the manufacturing industry can be followed on Rotterdam local television channel OPEN. Make 't Rotterdam follows young students who get a look behind the scenes at various manufacturing companies in the region.

"The Rotterdam manufacturing industry has a great impact on our daily lives and is an important driver of our economy. The manufacturing industry's call for talent is huge, but is this industry of today and tomorrow attractive to talent?" So the documentary series was recently introduced in a press release.

High-profile industry

On Monday 28 May, the new documentary series Make 't Rotterdam then actually premiered on the popular, local channel OPEN Rotterdam. "The series shows the innovative manufacturing industry that Rotterdam has. An industry where opportunities are up for grabs for young talent. An industry that in reality is much more high-profile than what you might initially think and has huge impact on our daily lives. For example, did you know that the Nespresso cups for our daily dose of caffeine are made in the Spaanse Polder? Or that the trams and trains by which millions of people travel every day undergo efficient maintenance or modernisation in Ridderkerk?"

Each week, the series features a student from Techniek College Rotterdam who spends a day at a manufacturing company. "Under the wing of a professional, who also once started as the student, the true face of Rotterdam's manufacturing industry becomes visible. The technology, skill and passion involved, but also the huge transformation towards robotisation, digitalisation and sustainability. The impact it has on the people of Rotterdam and even beyond. The opportunities that lie open for young people if they dare to take those chances. That you can and should be proud to work in the manufacturing industry.

Euro Caps

To show how skilled, varied and fantastic the manufacturing industry in the Rotterdam region is, visits are made to Euro Caps, which produce the aforementioned coffee cups, Heerema Fabrication Group (offshore constructions), Skel - Ex (scale up for non - powered exoskeletons to promote ergonomics in a production environment) and Alstom, which maintains trams and trains. The series is financed by OPEN Rotterdam and Dutch Makers Revolution, and can be seen back via OPEN Rotterdam.
On Friday 25 May, several directors, students and professionals watched the first episode of the series together and a dialogue was organised on how to attract young talent to the manufacturing industry. In the first episode Rémon van der Heijden, who gets to see how Euro Caps makes a billion coffee cups a year.

Soon you will read on Maakindustrie.nl an interview with the initiators behind the aforementioned Dutch Makers Revolution.
