Hynetwork, a subsidiary of Gasunie, will deliver the national hydrogen network in the Netherlands in phases over the next few years. It has published an updated network planning. Market players and other stakeholders can still respond to the roll-out plan until the end of January.
In 2023, Hynetwork began construction of the national hydrogen network. This infrastructure can help industry in the Netherlands become more sustainable. It ensures that the Netherlands remains an attractive place to do business, and it has a positive impact on the Dutch economy and employment. For industry, clarity regarding the planning and availability of the hydrogen network is crucial. Before the summer of this year, it became apparent that an update was needed to the roll-out plan being followed by Hynetwork. This was necessary, amongst other things, due to developments surrounding the Delta Rhine Corridor and the longer lead times in the project procedures.
Cabinet decision
In recent months, Hynetwork has been looking in detail at all sub-sections, which together form the national hydrogen network. In early December, Hynetwork was able to put the final piece of the puzzle in this regard with the cabinet 's decision to allow for a delivery of the Delta Rhine Corridor between 2031 and 2032. This provided clarity on the intended completion date of this crucial west-east connection of the hydrogen network in the Netherlands. This allowed the update round of the roll-out plan to be completed.
New network planning from Hynetwork
The updated network planning is as follows: The first section will be commissioned in Rotterdam by 2026 at the latest. In the following years, the infrastructure within the industrial clusters along the Dutch coast will become available before or in 2030. So will the connections from the northern Netherlands to the large-scale hydrogen storage facility HyStock and the first border connections to Germany and from Zeeland to Belgium. From 2031 to 2033 follows the completion of the network within the industrial cluster in Limburg and the connections between the clusters, including the Delta Rhine Corridor.
Hynetwork's phasing in brief:
2026: Rotterdam
2026-2030: Northern Netherlands, including connection to HyStock and border connections with Germany; North Sea Canal area;
Southwest Netherlands, including a border connection with Belgium
2031-2033: Limburg; connections between industrial clusters including the Delta Rhine Corridor
Until the end of January, market players and other stakeholders can respond to this rollout plan.
