AI, robotisation and industrialisation are going to radically change the tech sector in the coming years. It is inevitable for entrepreneurs in the tech sector to catch up with this technological revolution. New technology can help tech companies increase productivity, respond faster to customer needs, develop new business models and strengthen chain cooperation.

The report Artificial Intelligence, Robotisation and Industrialisation: the tech sector in 2030 was published at the end of November. The report shows that AI, robotisation and industrialisation can, in various ways, address the problems created by an ageing population and tight labour markets. For instance, it is increasingly difficult to find people for heavy and repetitive work; multipurpose robots can take over that work. In addition, hybrid AI (a combination of multiple AI techniques to solve complex issues faster) makes it possible to secure knowledge of experienced employees and share it widely. This is necessary so that that expertise is retained. With augmented working, mechanics get digital support, such as live instructions and virtual simulations. This also makes work more efficient.

Mass customisation

The move towards Mass Customisation - the efficient production of customised products - is another key trend. This technology allows companies to respond faster to customer requirements without increasing production costs. A good example is the prefab construction industry, where homes are almost completely customised using flexible production methods. This reduces costs and increases quality.

New business models and AI

Many companies are turning into product-centric organisations. They provide not only products, but also services such as maintenance and process optimisation. With technologies like hybrid AI, companies can better support customers and become strategic partners instead of just technology providers.

Chain collaboration

By using the Industrial Metaverse - a digital, virtual environment - and smart technologies, companies can capture and share their knowledge with supply chain partners. For example, a technical installation company can exchange real-time data with suppliers and construction partners, making processes run more smoothly and preventing waste.

Support

Techniek Nederland is going to support its members to get started with the new technologies. There will be education through a webinar, podcasts and presentations for groups of members. The knowledge from the report will become part of the training offer for the engineering sector. Moreover, the branches decided in the Aanvalsplan Techniek that the report will be the starting point for a joint action agenda aimed at increasing labour productivity.

Strengthen competitive position

Chairman Doekle Terpstra sees the new technologies as a unique opportunity to innovate: 'The solutions are ahead of us, but action is needed. This report shows how companies can use technology to tackle challenges while strengthening their competitive position. Now is the time to make plans and choices. The future is not waiting.' According to Terpstra, new technologies make it extra attractive for young technical talent to choose a career in engineering.
