During ESEF 2018 (from 20 to 23 March), we will visit several exhibitors to ask them a few questions about their innovations and their vision for the manufacturing industry. Today, among others, we were at Technische Unie, the largest technical wholesaler in the Netherlands with over 2 million items from more than 700 suppliers.

Click on the image below to watch the short video of Technische Unie on our YouTube channel.

Technische Unie can be found during ESEF in Hall 1, stand 01.A120.

Fewer production stoppages, but Dutch companies less optimistic about the economic outlook
Dutch companies are experiencing fewer production stoppages due to a lack of materials than they did a year ago. On average, production was halted for 21.4 days over the past twelve months, compared with 27.6 days in 2025. At the same time, the companies surveyed are less positive about their economic outlook: 37 per cent view it more positively than a year ago, compared with 57 per cent last year. This is revealed in reichelt elektronik’s Supply Chain Report 2026, for which 250 tech decision-makers at Dutch companies were surveyed.

Opening of Brightlands Circular Space set to accelerate the scaling up of plastic innovations
Many circular plastic innovations are showing promising results in pilot projects. However, the step towards industrial application often proves difficult. That is why Brightlands Circular Space (BCS) was opened at the Brightlands Chemelot Campus in Geleen. In this open innovation environment, companies can take that step more quickly and with greater certainty. BCS is an initiative of the Brightlands Chemelot Campus, Maastricht University and TNO.

‘Structural weakening of the Dutch business climate’
The Dutch business climate is not experiencing a temporary downturn, but rather a structural weakening. This is evident from the third edition of PwC’s Business Climate Heatmap. The Netherlands still ranks in the upper mid-tier internationally, but is losing ground year on year to the economic frontrunners of North-West Europe, whilst countries such as Portugal and Poland are strengthening their competitive position.
