On 27 October, nearly 60 parties signed the hydrogen in heavy mobility covenant. The goal? A covering network in North Holland of at least 8 hydrogen refuelling stations. These will be suitable for heavy vehicles, such as trucks, mobile machinery and agricultural vehicles. In addition, the aim is to stimulate the demand for hydrogen that provides a sound economic basis for these filling stations.

"Before purchasing a hydrogen vehicle, there must be certainty that hydrogen refuelling is possible. And in order to open a hydrogen refuelling station, there must be demand. We therefore want to break this 'chicken-and-egg' problem with this covenant." So says deputy minister Jeroen Olthof.

Hydrogen for heavy mobility

To be less dependent on fossil fuels, sustainable hydrogen seems to be a good alternative for trucks, mobile equipment, agricultural vehicles and inland navigation. But entrepreneurs do not dare to take steps now. As a result, hydrogen development is not getting off the ground sufficiently.

Licensing

And what about licensing? The challenges around hydrogen can only be met by the parties involved together. The relevant authorities need to work with vehicle suppliers, transporters and fuel suppliers.

Hydrogen covenant

Almost 60 parties want to work towards a covering network of refuelling stations and hydrogen vehicles in North Holland. On 27 October, during the Innovation Festival North Holland in Haarlem, they signed the hydrogen in heavy mobility covenant to this end. With this, they want to confirm their ambition and cooperation.

Hydrogen opportunities

The switch to hydrogen offers numerous opportunities. Using sustainable hydrogen emits less CO2 than using fossil fuels. At the same time, it contributes to cleaner air because it emits less particulate matter and nitrogen. This makes for a healthier living environment. Moreover, the transition to hydrogen creates new jobs, both in engineering and in science.
