Swedish startup Pol Boat is looking for a pure, simple form of relaxation on the water with its brand new Lux. Like a mini-camper, Lux invites you to leave the hustle and bustle of the city behind and explore nature. A beautiful and logical Scandinavian design, a solar-powered electric drive, a modular deck and a fold-out tent to spend the night support the traveller.
Counterpart luxury yachts
The 7.8-metre-long Lux is a design by naval architect and avid rower Gustav Larsson. It was deliberately designed as a counterpart to the huge yachts that dominate many harbours. In fact, it looks like it was designed to escape that lifestyle, as much as everyday life in the city. As such, it is actually a light motorised seafaring alternative to kayaking or canoe camping.
The cruising speed of 13 km/h is ideal for slowing down life instinctively. This allows every minute in nature to be experienced with all five senses. The design also provides a 100% solar mode, with solar panels directly powering the electric drive. The speed is that maximum 7.4 km/h (4 knots). With the help of those solar panels, 111 km (60 nautical miles) can be covered before recharging is required.
Versatile design
When designing the catamaran camper, Larsson collaborated with Swedish technology and design agency Above. Together, they worked the rough model into a working prototype. This was then turned into a polished version that is now close to going into production.
The Lux's hull is double decked. On deck, everything can be adapted to the user's needs. Thus, the catamaran can be used as a night explorer, a day boat for river cruises or a picnic boat for daytime parties. The steering is compact and the adjustable bench offers plenty of space. You can sit and relax on it during the day; sleep at night. A fabric tent offers protection from weather and insects. For extra sleeping space, a hammock can be attached. Furthermore, the Lux has a removable rear table. This can be used in sections as a dining table or, with a little intervention, as a portable grill or stove.
No price has yet been set for the Lux and the first test runs will take place this spring.
