French company Seabike has developed a swimming device that lets you use your own leg strength to shoot through the water at superhuman speeds. This crank-driven propeller looks a bit like an underwater unicycle.
Underwater bike
The idea for this 'underwater bike' is simple: you extend the Seabike's stick to the right length and tie it around your waist with a strap. Then you put your feet on the pedals and set it in motion, using the waist belt to push against.
This way, it powers an approximately 38 cm propeller that provides graceful propulsion. You can swim simultaneously with your arms, creating a surreal visual effect. Of course, you can also skim through the water like Superman with your arms stretched forward or dive down.
The propeller works both ways so you can also use your hands to operate the pedals. This may look less fun, but at least it provides some variety. The propeller with stick floats, so you don't have to worry if the belt accidentally comes loose.
With the holidays approaching, a gadget like this underwater bike seems entirely appropriate. Seabike organises its own snorkelling tours from Cannes and also sells it with snorkelling boards.
