The Lighthouse is a revolutionary take on residential design. This round glass house can continuously rotate 360 degrees, allowing its owner to enjoy optimal sunlight and a view that alternates between lush landscape and sunny coastline.
The Lighthouse (also known as 179 Maraetai Drive) is situated next to Maraetai Beach on the Pohutukawa Coast in Auckland, New Zealand. It was originally designed by the current owner, Don Dunick, in the 1990s. It took several years to complete. Dunick had to overcome all sorts of challenges, including installing plumbing and electrical systems in a rotating house. He also had to prove to the local authorities that the idea was safe and practical.
The house stands on a platform and rotates at the touch of a button. Fortunately, the rotating system is very quiet and takes 33 minutes to complete one rotation in the default setting. Even at high speed, it still takes 15 minutes, so it will never feel like you are on a thrilling rollercoaster.
The Lighthouse is currently on sale for the first time. It is reported to fetch just over $1 million New Zealand (roughly €550,000). The video below contains more information.
