Nemesis Yachts has presented a lightning-fast and luxurious hydrofoil catamaran. With the Nemesis, insane speeds of up to 50 knots are possible thanks to the hydrofoils that lift the catamaran out of the water.
The hydrogen fuel cell with which the Nemesis will be equipped has considerable storage capacity that will be supplemented by 750 square metres of solar panels, good for some 150 kW of power. With this, the Nemesis One reaches speeds of up to 18 knots; with all sails in use, that speed is quickly multiplied.
According to the catamaran builder, the Nemesis One requires a minimum crew. The giant Oceanwing sail is fully automated. Hydraulic and electrical systems thus take over the manual work of the traditional crew. Combined with the powerful computers, the best and fastest sailing tactics are chosen in all weather conditions.
The Nemesis One is lifted out of the water by the hydrofoils. The automated sail, a development by French company Ayro, is automatically hoisted, reefed and reefed. The sail works closely with the catamaran's propulsion and navigation systems, making it some 2.5 times more efficient than conventional sails of similar size, according to the builder. According to the supplier, the Nemesis One can even sail fully autonomously: LiDAR is deployed to recognise obstacles while waveforms, height and frequency are continuously monitored.
The hydrofoils are also automated and constantly adjust themselves for optimal comfort on deck. For top speeds, it switches to "performance mode" where the hydrofoil comes out of the water on the windward side at the expense of some comfort.
At 101 metres long, 39 metres wide and a sail height of no less than 89 metres, Nemesis One is by no means a small boat. The deck and staterooms are correspondingly bulky. The latter can even be completely removed by crane. In that case, "ultra-light race mode" can be taken advantage of.
