Many manufacturers are looking for ways to produce more sustainably. One option is to opt for plant-based materials. Toothbrush brand TIO has toothbrushes and brush heads made from bioplastic.
All the bioplastic materials used to manufacture the toothbrushes are plant-based. "During their growth, the plants convert CO2 into pure oxygen, which in turn leads to a significantly improved CO2 balance even when we reuse the material," say the makers. "In addition, the material of the brush head is biodegradable (according to EN 13432), which prevents the formation of microplastics. In addition to saving on fossil resources, we do not use additives such as artificial plasticiser, making the TIO toothbrush better for your body."
The easiest way to avoid waste is to not let it arise. Therefore, a TIO toothbrush's hygienic cap is only on the top part and results in significant material savings. Once unpacked, the cap serves as a handy travel cap and the toothbrush stays hygienically clean.
Replaceable brush heads
Reduction and reuse are the two principles of waste prevention and served as a guideline for the development of the TIO toothbrush. The innovative plug-in brush system gives it a material saving of 70%. Separating the brush head and handle is similar to other interchangeable toothbrushes, except for the mouth area. This prevents the accumulation of germs and ensures a hygienic, clean brushing experience every time the brush head is replaced. The handle is reusable and has a high-quality appearance due to the addition of natural minerals.
Local production
TIO toothbrushes are produced in Germany. This enables short transport routes, avoiding unnecessary CO2 emissions. It also ensures consistent product quality and ensures fair working conditions.
"Good design is fair, makes a product understandable and facilitates its use. These principles underpin the product design and are reflected in every detail of the TIO toothbrush. Supported by a vibrant colour palette, TIO is a coveted and useful design object for everyone."
Exclusive sustainable packaging has been used in the packaging of the interchangeable brush heads. All packaging is free of plastic foil`s; recyclable cardboard packaging is made from FSC®-certified forestry.
Tiomatic
A detailed study by the Cochrane* Institute proves that no toothbrush polishes teeth as cleanly and reduces inflamed gums as a rotary electric toothbrush. This is reflected in its constant growth rate of about 6% per year. To offer electronic toothbrush users an alternative to their plastic brush heads, they have developed a bio-based brush head at TIO for this purpose.
So far at TIO, they have managed to manufacture 90% of their brush heads from bio-based material, which results in a much better CO2 balance. Only the shaft still consists of a technical crude oil-based plastic (POM), which cannot yet be replaced due to heavy loads. Together with their manufacturing partner, they are in a test phase at TIO to start replacing this part with a bio-based material.
