Pampers will introduce a 'smart' nappy later this year that alerts parents when a nappy needs changing. The nappy is part vna the so-called Lumi system.
Pampers worked with Verily, a Google subsidiary, to develop the nappy, Bright.nl writes. According to the developers, parents will soon no longer have to guess why their baby is crying.
The Lumi system will be launched later this year. It consists of nappy-mounted sensors, a Logitech camera and smart software. This tracks when a child sleeps, pees and poops. The Lumi system comes with special nappies to which a sensor can be attached. That parents are looking forward to the system is shown by the fact that a waiting list has already been established in the US - the country where Lumi will be available first.
Paediatricians often adivs parents to keep close track of their children's poo and pee behaviour and sleep patterns. With Lumi, parents do not have that worry; the system keeps track of this and gives parents the information they need. It alerts parents when the nappy is wet, but not when it is full.
Camera
Another part of the Lumi nappy system is a Circle 2 security camera from Logitec. It can be used as a baby monitor but also measures e.g. temperature and humidity in the room. Via the included app, parents can track their little one's development.
The Lumi range is expected to be launched this autumn. It is not yet known what the nappies will cost.
Another well-known nappy brand, Huggies, launched a smart nappy in South Korea a few months ago, having already developed a smart system to recognise full nappies in 2013. The so-called Huggies Nappy Notifier was produced in 2013 as a test product including an app. It consisted of a moisture detector inside the nappy combined with a Bluetooth transmitter that sent a signal to parents' phones.
Bright also cited in its article that smart nappies are also being used in incontinence care, with the Philadelphia Care Foundation, for example, working with the smart nappies from Danish incontinence material manufacturer Abena. "The Abena Nova nappy incorporates wireless technology such as internet-connected sensors to accurately measure moisture levels."
