If you want a kayak, which is not inflatable, you usually also need a car with a suitable roof rack. However, German product designer Daniel Schult has come up with an alternative: he developed a foldable kayak that can be carried like a backpack

First of all, yes, US manufacturer 'Oru' already currently makes origami-like kayaks that fold flat for easy transport and storage. Schult's CLR kayak is very similar to origami, weighs very little, can be folded and quickly unfolded. In one to two minutes, the kayak is ready to go.

As with similar kayaks , the body of the CLR consists of pre-folded, corrugated polypropylene. The material is covered by a protective coating of ethylene-propylene rubber. With the help of straps and aluminium fasteners, the boat is held in the desired shape once unpacked.

The ready-made CLR is 3.4 metres long and 65 centimetres wide. Its maximum load capacity is 118 kilograms . The user sits on an integrated, foam seat with a backrest. Once folded, the kayak is only 70 x 50 x 6 centimetres and can be easily carried using the included belt set. The whole package weighs 6 kilos; considerably lighter than many comparable variants.
