Architecture firm Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) has plans for a new green headquarters for e-commerce fashion company Farfetch. The firm describes the project as an artificial extension of the hill and consists of a dozen interconnected, green-roofed buildings. The buildings are designed to promote collaboration in a pleasant working environment.

Farfetch's headquarters will be located on the slopes of the Leça River in Porto, Portugal, and will be part of the larger Fuse Valley project, also being tackled by BIG. Fuse Valley comprises a number of buildings housing tech companies, startups and other businesses around squares, parks and courtyards.

Green oasis

Farfetch's headquarters itself is characterised by a series of green roofs that vary in height, creating artificial peaks and valleys. Within these will be terraces where staff can gather for meetings or during work breaks. Several walkways will also be integrated into the green roofs and around the site.

The interior of the headquarters will have a lot of art. The whole thing is reminiscent of attic studios with a lot of attention to greenery. Furthermore, natural light is a major focus - at least it will look nicer than a typical office cubicle.

Valley shape

At ground level, the facades recede to increase public space and create natural canopies that welcome visitors, employees and customers. The buildings' chamfered corners merge into arches and openings between courtyards. Each building is tailored to its specific purpose, with different floor plans giving an architectural experience that is as vibrant as it is varied.
Construction of the project is due to start in 2023 and the doors should open in 2025. The development is being taken in hand by Portugal's Castro Group.
