Electric tanker in Tokyo Bay

Electric motor and ferry boats are slowly starting to make inroads into the maritime world. Soon, a battery-electric vessel may be added to them: the e5 tanker. Remarkably, the all-electric tanker is being used to supply conventional fuel to other vessels.

The 62-metre vessel is being developed under Japan's e5 project, a consortium of shipping and maritime technology companies. Project partner Asahi Tanker has placed an order for the first two tankers, which will be used for fuel delivery in Tokyo Bay. Kawasaki Heavy Industries is designing the propulsion system.

Each 499-tonne vessel has two 1,740-kWh Orca ESS lithium-ion battery packs, made by Corvus Energy, for a combined capacity of 3,480 kWh (3.5 MWh). These packs drive the motors of two 300-kW azimuth propellers. The cruising speed achieved in the process is about 10 knots. The range per battery charge is currently simply described as 'many hours'.

Environmentally friendly and comfortable

Not only will the e5 emit no exhaust fumes, but the electric motors will also reportedly produce less vibration and noise than traditional engines. This will make conditions on board even more comfortable for the crew. Moreover, the ship will be able to provide electricity to emergency services in case of a natural disaster in the Tokyo Bay region. The two tankers are currently being built by KOA Industry Co Ltd and Imura Shipyard. According to plans, the first ship will be launched sometime next year, and the second will follow in 2023.
