Fireproof plastic transit system makes ships lighter

A Dutch company has developed a new range of high-performance plastic feed-through pipes and windows for the reliable and convenient routing, as well as the fire-resistant, gas-, smoke- and watertight sealing of cables and pipes. The new feed-through pipes and frames form part of a range that can be used, for example, in sandwich panels in offshore installations or on ships. The use of plastic instead of steel enables significant weight savings.

Plastic that doesn't burn? It sounds crazy, yet a Dutch company has managed to pull it off. The company, which specialises in fire safety, offers a solution for leading cables and pipes that is not only fireproof, but also lightweight. Compared to stainless steel or steel alternatives, the HR plastic version improves working conditions for installers/assemblers and allows substantial savings on transport and storage costs.

The transit pipes and windows have a loose flange that is attached to the wall using special NOFIRNO sealant. The transit pipes have a standard length of 300 mm; the dimensions of the transit windows are 150 x 150 mm and 150 x 300 mm. The system's fire resistance has been successfully tested in a min. 100 mm thick wall. The rectangular windows have a wall thickness of 5 mm and are also supplied in split version for optimum mounting and installation convenience. In this version, a special NOFIRNO gasket is placed between the window parts.

After the cables or pipes have been fed through, the lead-through frame or pipe is finished with the company's sealing system . In this way, a fully fire-resistant and water-, smoke- and gas-tight seal of the lead-through is achieved. The new modules are widely used in one of TengizChevroil's (TCO) most complex oil and gas projects in Kazakhstan.
