Dow is investing in an expansion project at its Terneuzen production site. This initiative is in line with the group's growth strategy to support pharmaceutical and household markets. This project is Dow's first-ever production of active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) in the EMEAI region (Europe, Middle East, Africa and India) and will create more than 40 jobs. Construction is underway and the facility is expected to be operational by the end of 2025.

Dow produces the product carbowax sentry polyethylene glycol (PEG)) which is widely used in various active pharmaceutical applications and excipients. The investment includes the installation of a new alkoxylation reactor and a solidification plant (liquid to powder form) for high molecular weight PEG. "The production of these high molecular weight products into high-value applications is in line with Dow's ambition to offer products and technologies with long-term differentiated value that meet the needs of our customers and the market." So says Ahmed El-Zawahry, EMEAI Dow Industrial Solutions (DIS) Commercial Director.

Dow's biggest project in 17 years in Europe

"This project in Terneuzen represents a significant investment in Europe. It is the largest project Dow has undertaken in Europe in the past 17 years," said Jaume Sariol, Vice-President Operations EMEAI and Site Leader of the Terneuzen site. "I am proud that this expansion is taking place here. And that despite the challenges facing the European industry, we are still finding growth opportunities. This project builds on multiple advantages in Terneuzen, including raw material flexibility and downstream integration. It is an important growth project for Dow, for our Industrial Solutions business, for our region and for our Terneuzen location."

Additional jobs

Tabita Verburg, Area President Dow Benelux, France, Spain, Portugal, UK and Nordicsstressed , "This investment underlines our commitment to the region. It will bring more than 40 additional jobs to Zeeuws-Vlaanderen. It is also an excellent example of innovation and growth. It will ensure we continue to meet the changing needs of our customers. This new facility will be a crucial local asset for the fast-growing pharmaceutical and household markets. It will strengthen our regional and global position in the industry, allowing us to better serve our customers."

Construction in full swing

"The construction of our new manufacturing facility is in full swing with more than 100 employees from contractor companies present at the Terneuzen site," said Peter Colman, Project Director. "We are mainly working on the foundation of the plant. All piles have been driven into the ground. All major concrete foundations have been completed and recently the first parts of the structure went up. Cooperation between our teams and local partners is progressing well, with safety being our top priority. Together, we are making significant progress in the construction of this new facility."
