Cars, flamethrowers, giant excavators, spaceships, solar panels. We've already seen all sorts of things come by from Tesla. Elon Musk's company suddenly came up with surfboards earlier this week. The limited edition of two hundred copies sold out in no time.

Tesla announced its new 'zero emission item' and this one turned out to have nothing to do with its core car business: it sold a limited-edition surfboard on its website. Sold, because after tech site Electrek reported it, the site soon hit a snag and visitors were shown an error message. It turned out that the only 200 copies were sold out within a very short time. That while the surfboards are not exactly cheap: they cost $1,500 each.

Made in collaboration with Lost Surfboards, the surfboards are inspired by Tesla's series of electric cars. And they are not electric carrier boards or anything funky like that. Tesla described the boards on its website as follows:

"Designed by the Tesla Design Studio in collaboration with Lost Surfboards and Matt 'Mayhem' Biolos, surfboard designer for World Surf League Championship athletes. The Limited Edition Tesla Surfboard features a mix of the same high-quality matt and gloss finishes used on all our cars. The deck is reinforced with lightweight 'Black Dart' carbon fibre, inspired by the interior in our cars and featuring tonal logos in subtle contrast gloss. "

Surfboards might seem an odd match for a car company, but this is not the first time Tesla clothing has come up with a completely different product. For example, the website also sells a clothing line for men, women and children, ranging in price from around $25 to $100 for a jacket.

Tesla's surfboards are now already being offered on eBay for a few thousand dollars each. It is not known whether Tesla itself will market the boards again.
