Yamaha Motor has already pioneered the development of hydrogen engines for cars and off-road vehicles. Now the company wants to launch its hydrogen combustion programme on water too. The new prototype hydrogen outboard engine will get its premiere at the 2024 Miami International Boat Show. A preview of a cleaner future for boaters and water sports enthusiasts.
Long before the government and industry were rapidly developing cleaner, morecarbon-neutral motor vehicles, Yamaha was experimenting with everything from electric motorbikes to methanol fuel cells. The company's ingenuity has not waned over time. In recent years, the company has researched a motorbike on water, a steerable electric propulsion system for shipping and interchangeable batteries for motorbikes. And it has been hard at work on a 5.0-litre V8 hydrogen combustion engine for none other than Toyota, perhaps the best-known proponent of hydrogen.
contributing toCO2 neutrality targets, Yamaha plans to continue with its multiple clean energy strategy. In doing so, the company is also firmly committed to reducing emissions while using Yamaha products, including motorbikes, personal watercraft and outboard engines.
Yamaha recognises that different products and markets require different approaches to clean energy. According to the company, water resistance whilst sailing, widely varying requirements (commercial fishing, leisure, etc.) and low power density mean that electric battery systems are not the most practical solution for many maritime applications. That is why the company is also focusing onCO₂-neutral synthetic fuels, fuel cells and hydrogen engines.
Like Yamaha's land-based hydrogen engines, the hydrogen outboard engine delivers a zeroCO2-emitting engine. Additional specifications and background information will be released by Yamaha next month at the Boat Show in Miami.
