If it were up to Nyobolt, we could eventually have EVs fully charged in just minutes. The company specialising in battery technology is partnering with design firm CALLUM. Together, they are working on a concept vehicle integrating Nyobolt's battery technology.

Who is Nyobolt?

Nyobolt is a British company focused on developing battery and charging technology. The company was founded in 2019 by Professor Clare Grey, DBE, FRS and Dr Sai Shivareddy.

Its mission is to tackle and significantly reduce charging times. It focuses on various battery applications. These range from power tools and household appliances to electric vehicles and industrial robots.

Charge in just minutes

Among other things, the company wants to greatly shorten charging times, reducing them from hours to just minutes. It also wants to extend battery life, which should lower the total cost of ownership (TCO).

Nyobolt is also focusing on increasing the energy density of batteries. This should make batteries both smaller and lighter with the same capacity. This simplifies the processing of batteries in products, including electric vehicles.

Who is CALLUM?

Nyobolt is partnering with CALLUM, a design firm founded by designer Ian Callum. Callum is a British car designer who previously worked for Ford, TWR, Aston Martin and Jaguar Cars (later Jaguar Land Rover).

In 2019, Callum founded CALLUM, which focuses on designing a wide range of products. For example, the company was previously involved in the design of the Aston Martin Vanquish 25 and the BARQ Mobility 2.0 electric scooter, as well as a vehicle for the Prodrive racing team. However, think also about bicycles, chairs and beverage bottles.

Together, the parties are working on a concept vehicle. With this, Nyobolt and CALLUM aim to show how Nyobolt's technology can be used in passenger vehicles. Nyobolt and CALLUM will present this design in June 2023. The design is by Julian Thomson, who is now design director at General Motors Advanced Design Europe. The concept was developed and implemented by CALLUM.

Reduce charging times from hours to minutes

"At Nyobolt, we are unlocking the potential of battery technology to drive innovations that cannot wait. The rapid shift to battery-powered electric vehicles around the world is a good example of an industry that needs our patented battery now to reduce charging times from hours to minutes," said Dr Sai Shivareddy, CEO of Nyobolt.

Shivareddy: "Partnering with an established name like CALLUM and leveraging its experience and expertise in both automotive design and engineering is going to support our strategic goal of securing acceptance in this sector."

David Fairbairn, managing director at CALLUM: "We continue to see charging, access to battery materials and battery degradation as pain points in the transition to electric vehicles. Nyobolt's breakthrough battery technology offers the automotive industry a solution to these huge challenges. In the coming months, we will illustrate the compelling benefits of this new technology for the industry and for motorists."
