Philips will present its innovative sleep solution SmartSleep at the IFA in Berlin next Thursday. According to the Brabant-based tech giant, the wearable system is the world's first and only clinically proven solution for consumers to improve the quality of deep sleep for people who do not get enough sleep.
Earlier this year, Philips announced SmartSleep, the latest addition to Philips' growing portfolio of smart digital platforms and intelligent solutions that connect people, technology and data to give consumers data-driven insights into their health and access to professional expertise and advice. The company hopes to attract eyes this Thursday at IFA in Berlin, one of the largest consumer electronics fairs, during the presentation of the Smartsl
"At Philips, we are convinced that there is always a way to make life better," said Egbert van Acht, Chief Business Leader of the Personal Health business at Philips. "At this year's CES trade show, we already presented innovations that help consumers take a more active role in monitoring their health and well-being. New innovative solutions such as SmartSleep - which builds on our leading position in sleep therapy and the more than 2.6 billion nights of sleep data Philips has collected over the past decade - show that we are uniquely positioned to combine clinical knowledge with a superior customer experience."
The video below (click on the image) explains a bit more about the SmartSleep.
Brain stimulation
Almost 40 per cent of people between 25 and 54 get less than the recommended seven hours of sleep per night, leading to problems with concentration, memory and focus, according to research. Studies show that deep sleep (also called slow-wave sleep) plays a crucial role in resetting our brain to be more alert and focused. People who experience high-quality deep sleep have been shown to be more alert and energetic during the day, and have better memory consolidation and executive functions.
Philips' new SmartSleep solution is uniquely designed for people who do not get enough sleep due to their lifestyle. Unlike sleep trackers, which only track the user's sleep pattern, SmartSleep actively ensures more thorough and longer deep sleep. Thanks to two small sensors and advanced algorithms, SmartSleep accurately identifies a person's sleep stages through the night. When periods of deep sleep are detected, a clinically proven technology provides real-time stimulation using customised sound tones. An accompanying app keeps a log of sleep improvement over time and offers tips and advice to create the best possible sleep. SmartSleep uses the more than 2.8 billion nights of sleep data Philips has collected over the past decade. Philips worked closely with a Sleep Medical Advisory Board composed of world-renowned sleep doctors, scientists and medical specialists, who played a crucial role in SmartSleep's end-to-end innovation. Its effectiveness was tested in a randomised, so-called double-blind clinical trial that showed an increase in the amount of deep sleep people got. They also scored significantly better during memory and motor skills tests.
SmartSleep, which has now launched in the German market after the US, will soon be equipped with Artificial Intelligence to enhance the personally tailored user experience. Existing users in the US and all new users in Germany will be able to install this update, which is expected to be launched later this year.
