Earlier this year, ODA unveiled plans for a pair of unusual towers in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The architecture firm has now followed that design with another pair of eye-catching residential towers elsewhere in the city. The high-rise buildings are characterised by their tapered form and exoskeleton-like exteriors.

Ombelle

The project, called Ombelle, will be at 300 NE 3rd Avenue and adjacent to a former industrial area that is being redeveloped. The total size is about 140,000 square metres. The towers themselves will have 43 floors each. Nothing is yet known about the exact height, but to put it in perspective, Fort Lauderdale's tallest tower, the Icon Las Olas House, reaches a height of 139 metres and has 42 floors. Most remarkable, however, is the exterior design. In fact, the shape of the towers widens as it gets higher. The outer shell looks like an exoskeleton.

Balconies as 'wrap around'

This exoskeleton accentuates the transition of the tower shapes, from an L-shape at the base to a rectangle at the top, creating sleek lines that the eye can follow as the towers move away from each other. The architecture firm designed an intricate, layered façade, with the exoskeleton as the outer shell. Balconies are located wrap-around to the towers, giving a unique sense of private residences . These different layers create a visually intriguing structure and give the building a sophisticated form.
