For those who want to sail 'green', Vision Marine Technologies offers an all-electric E-Motion 180E outboard engine. The engine is not only cleaner but also quieter than comparable fossil-fueled versions. The 180E is currently the most powerful electric outboard engine in the world and could easily become the fastest too. To this end, Vision began a collaboration with Hellkats Powerboats in an attempt to raise the world speed record for all-electric boats above 161 km/h.

The 180E has an output of 180 hp and is intended as an alternative to conventional outboard engines. Vision expects the motor to be used mainly on boats ranging from 5.5 m to 8 m in length.

Durable and powerful

The range will ultimately depend, among other things, on the design of the boat itself, weight and weather conditions, but a range of 113 km at a cruising speed of 32 km/h is expected to be quite achievable.

To also stick the title of world's most powerful e-engine on the 180E, Vision has teamed up with Miami-based Hellkats. The collaboration will result in an all-electric version of Hellkats' 9.8-metre Super-Sport Widebody catamaran, the Fulgura l. It will be powered by twin E-Motion outboard motors. Its top speed is expected to be 87 knots (161 km/h) - more than enough to beat the existing record of 142.6 km/h.

Behind, the average buyer of the E-Motion 180E will be interested not so much in the world speed record but in the benefits of electric motors: emission- and odour-free cruising, virtually silent operation, and greatly reduced maintenance and fuel costs.
