Drone4: innovations in drone technology and hydrogen propulsion
Developments in the field of drones follow each other in rapid succession, with innovation and technological advances as keywords. Drone4, part of Machinefabriek Boessenkool in Almelo, is known for its leading innovativeness. At ESEF Maakindustrie 2024 in Utrecht, Drone4 will present its latest drone solutions, covering a wide range of applications.
A drone of considerable size
Take, for example, the drone also on display at the ESEF trade fair: the FireFighting drone. Whilst fire engines can extinguish fires at heights of up to around 25 metres, this drone has a much greater range. Think in particular of hard-to-reach areas, such as emerging solar panel parks where the demand for fire safety is growing. A Drone4 solution, thanks in part to its multi-tasking features such as monitoring whilst extinguishing, can extinguish fires very quickly, precisely and powerfully at exactly the right spot. The so-called ‘fognail’ can deliver water pressure of up to 15 bar. These drones are also suitable for other logistical applications, such as installing solar panels or air-conditioning units on roofs where a mobile crane is the only viable option. A load test of no less than 150 kg was recently carried out successfully. In addition, drones can be used to quickly deliver life-saving medicines to more remote areas.
A lightweight solution for greater heights
Weight plays a key role in drones. A 30-metre hose with a diameter of 38 mm can easily weigh 37.5 kg. That is why One Seven Compressed Air Foam has been under consideration as an alternative for some time now. It is considerably lighter than water and suitable for altitudes of up to 400 metres. In short, it is a way of pushing the boundaries.
The advent of hydrogen-powered drones
At Drone4, electrically powered drones have reached a critical point. Every additional battery increases the total weight, resulting in a shorter flight time. To tackle this problem, Drone4 is preparing to launch the first drone powered by a hydrogen engine.
Innovation in hydrogen developments
Drone4 receives knowledge sharing on hydrogen developments from, amongst others, H2 Hub Twente, the hydrogen platform where development, knowledge sharing and application are central. Drone4 also collaborates with a large number of parties, such as various cooperating regions. This collaboration focuses primarily on the further development of an optimal fire-extinguishing device, addressing all key aspects such as safety, applications, materials, personnel and efficiency.
Regulatory challenges
One point of concern is that developments in the field of drones are progressing much faster than the regulations governing safety standards and requirements. Whilst there are clear regulations at European level, these only apply to drones weighing up to 25 kg. In the Netherlands, additional requirements are imposed on top of this, making it unclear whether certain applications are permitted. The best solution would be for each sector, with its own specific circumstances, to have its own separate regulations, in order to keep everything clear and organised. Work is underway, but progress is unfortunately slower than desired.
