Used car prices rose 10.6% in a year. A used car was for sale in the Netherlands in 2017 for an average of 14,422 euros, up from 13,042 euros in 2016.

This is according to the Used Car Price Index (AGPI) by car trading platform AutoScout24. Used car prices rose across Europe. Despite the increase being the highest in the Netherlands, the average asking price of a used car in the Netherlands remains the lowest in all of Europe. France is the most expensive country to buy a used car with an average asking price of €20,710, followed by Germany with an average asking price of €19,399.

New used cars are relatively expensive in the Netherlands

Interestingly, used cars up to 12 months old in the Netherlands are by far the most expensive of all European Union member states surveyed. A used car of this age costs an average of 33,824 euros in the Netherlands. Austria follows in second place with an average asking price of 30,723 euros, followed by Belgium with 29,077 euros.

"In 2017, the cheapest cars up to a year old were offered in Spain and Italy. However, the condition of the car is often not comparable to the same cars on Dutch and German markets. For example, small dents and scratches testify to less careful handling of the car in these southern European countries," explained Jurgen Vugts, Managing Director of AutoScout24.nl.

Once the age of a used car exceeds one year, the vehicle is more expensive in several other EU member states than in the Netherlands. For example, an average one- to three-year-old used car in the Netherlands costs an average of 24,564 euros, while for such a vehicle, Austria charges an average of 27,889 euros and Germany 25,647 euros. On the contrary, in Belgium (average 23,429 euros), France (average 22,509 euros), Spain (average 22,151 euros) and Italy (average 21,798 euros), these vehicles are cheaper.

Oldtimers

Also striking are the hefty price differences between different EU member states for used cars older than 30 years. An oldtimer costs 23,968 euros on average in the Netherlands, putting our country in the middle of the table. In Italy (average 18,306 euros) and Austria (average 22,024 euros), for example, a vintage car is cheaper, but in Belgium (average 27,318 euros) and France (average 33,409 euros) it is more expensive.

This trend can also be seen with youngtimers that are 20 to 30 years old. Such a vehicle costs an average of 7,606 euros in the Netherlands. Only in Austria is a youngtimer cheaper with an average asking price of 5,840 euros. Youngtimers are by far the most expensive in France with an average asking price of 21,426 euros, followed by Belgium with an average asking price of 12,424 euros.
