KUKA wants to increase the usability of its robots with augmented reality (AR). The technology makes it easier to get started with a new robot and integrate it into existing production processes.

AR is a technology that combines a representation of the real physical world with digital elements. For example, for displaying additional information about displayed objects, getting instructions directly into view without having to interrupt work or for taking notes directly on the image you are currently seeing in front of your eyes. The technology can be used via AR headsets, smartphones or tablets, among others.

The technology thus offers interesting opportunities in industry, among others. For instance, AR makes it possible to visualise adjustments to machines, systems and production lines in advance, so that any problems come to light early on. However, consider also increasing productivity and reducing error proneness by visually displaying clear instructions on a machine or component that employees are working on.

Robot cell visualisation

The company is betting on AR with KUKA.MixedReality Assistant and KUKA.MixedReality Safe on the market. The KUKA.MixedReality Assistant app visualises the robot cell's environment on a smartphone or tablet, displaying digital information. KUKA.MixedReality Safe is an add-on technology package, which complements KUKA.MixedReality Assistant. It includes robot data and configurations from KUKA.SafeOperation.

The app and supporting package simplify the commissioning of robots from KUKA. For example, during the initial start-up of a cell, users can use the AR software to simulate both protected areas and workstations. The visualisation thus helps with early detection and addressing of potential hazards. Users can also validate robot paths, tools and fault geometries quickly and safely in the visualised environment.

Displaying data graphically

KUKA.MixedReality Assistant can provide all kinds of data insight on smartphones and tablets. Among other things, it can provide a graphical representation of:

  • cartesian surveillance rooms
  • safety-oriented tools
  • exceeded guard rooms
  • configuration parameters for cartesian surveillance space
  • configuration parameters for safety-oriented tools

Because the AR solution works on smartphones and tablets, no additional hardware such as AR glasses is needed. However, the technology package KUKA.MixedReality Safe must be installed as a data source on the robot controller. Those who want to use the Safe functions must additionally install one of the KUKA.SafeOperation technology packages on the controller.
