Nissan is investing up to two billion British pounds, or €2.3 billion, in electric vehicle production in Sunderland, UK. At its Sunderland plant, Nissan plans to produce two models of EVs: an electric version of the Juke and an electric Qashqai.

This was announced by UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. Nissan has long been active in UK Sunderland; the Japanese company opened the doors of its Sunderland plant in 1986. More than 11 million vehicles have been built at the plant since its opening.

New gigafactory planned

Nissan now plans to build a new gigafactory for EVs in Sunderland. The Japanese car brand is investing a total of 1.12 billion British pounds, or 1.29 billion euros, in this gigafactory.

This plant focuses on producing the electric Juke and Qashqai. Nissan is marketing these models alongside its existing Leaf EVs.

Total investment comes to 2 billion British

In addition, Nissan is investing 8.8 million British pounds (over 1 billion euros converted) in the supply chain and infrastructure around its new gigafactory. The Japanese carmaker is thus putting a total of GBP 2 billion into the UK automotive sector.

Nissan is thus further stepping up its investment in manufacturing in the United Kingdom (UK). It already announced in 2021 an investment one billion pounds in an EV hub together with battery partner AESC. Since 2021, Nissan has already put a total of $3 billion into the UK automotive sector.
